The Douglas County Chamber of Commerce hires a college summer intern every year. They look for someone from the Douglas County area that is good with people. The intern is not paid, but they try to pay them a stipend at the end of the summer if possible.
The responsibilities of a chamber intern are to assist in all areas and programs, as needed. This includes helping to promote, market, prepare for, and carry to fruition all chamber events, functions, programs, and other actions relating to member services. Interns are asked to assist all staff members when needed. That includes attending meetings, working with volunteers and staff to plan and organize various events, promote events to chamber members, and provide clerical support and labor as necessary to prepare for and carry the event in to completion.
The Douglas County Chamber of Commerce was organized in 1945 and is the oldest and largest representation of business in Douglas County. The chamber is made up of four full-time employees, with the help of occasional part-time staff and many volunteers. Five program areas make up the chamber: Membership and Events, Government Affairs, Economic Development, Marketing, and Workforce Development. I was a student ambassador in high school to the chamber and thoroughly enjoyed my experience.
I am starting as an intern on May 12th and am excited to learn more about what I will be doing this summer.
